Capstone Projects

Renovation of Historical Manor House Built in 1906

The first order of business for Capstone Construction was to remove the trees and shrubberies to gain access to the house for the heavy equipment that was to be needed for this renovation.

Phase One of Project - Exterior

The original entry was on the left side, but the new entry will be on this side that faces the street. The new entry construction will mimic the left entry.

Structural Assessment of the House

  • Rotted base and column
  • Cracking capitals
  • Foundation under columns need replacing
  • Terrace walls need rebuilding
  • Portico sills need repair
  • Fluted shafts measured for new column reproduction

Full Size Layouts of Architectural Details for Reproduction

  • Architrave Open Porch
  • Molding profiles for new replacements
  • Spindle pattern for reproduction

After the inspection of the bases, columns, and capitals, Capstone and the client agreed that new columns had to be custom-built rather than repaired. There was much to do to the structures in preparation for the arrival of the new columns. The side entry had to be shored up and repaired prior to the new columns arriving, as the roof and deck had dropped 5" due to column rot.

The Columns Arrive

  • Roof and deck supported; existing structure reinforced, and first column installed
  • 6 columns installed! Notice holes in soffit for column ventilation
  • Completed columns and details installed on original entry
  • Installing first column on new entry side
  • 6 Columns installed
  • New roof structure over new columns

It's also clear from the above pictures that a great deal of stripping and repair to trim details have progressed while waiting for columns to arrive.
